Using Big Data for Bigger Transportation Challenges
Our transportation system is composed of many assets—massive networks of roads, active work zones, traffic signals, and countless more. Many of these assets were deployed with underlying assumptions about the traffic they would serve, typically being designed using that infamous term “the latest available traffic data.” This traditional method establishes a terrific starting point, but as we all know, travel behavior often misbehaves. Countless case studies have shown that triggering events—like major road reconstruction projects, highway closures, or natural disasters—can create traffic operations that defy even the savviest regional transportation models. Since traditional data collection methods are expensive and incomplete, it is easy to write off these inefficiencies with shrugged shoulders and an “it is what it is” attitude—but, for the parent who is stuck in unnecessary traffic and misses their child’s recital, the impact is very real and very personal.
With the dawn of the 21st Century, new data sources have emerged that can fill some of the gaps. The term “Big Data” is often talked about with great interest, a potential tool that might give us answers to our every question, but it is often such an abstract topic without a clear path to an actionable result. How do we use Big Data, and what exactly can we use it for in transportation? This presentation touches on a variety of big data applications in our industry today, highlighting the use cases where they were effectively deployed and found to create tangible value.
